this week on the interwebz

Happy Friday!  Slow day at the office?  Need something to geek out on?  Don’t trip I got you.  Here are some highlights of what I came across on the internet this week; in no particular order.  Enjoy.

The Georgetown basketball team are in China on some friendly, cordial, ambassadors of our country, cultural exchange, global sportsmanship type…..(oh) shit.

There’s some greater political, socioeconomic allegory happening here, but I just can’t quite….give a damn.

The Weeknd presents: Thursday.

Zone feat. Drake is what’s up.  I’m love/hate with wheelchair Jimmy; this is all love though.  I have high expectations for Take Care and the album with Weezy F “the F is for Friday” Baby.  DL the catalog (click photo) before ol’ dude goes record label on us.

Chaz “STEEZ” Ortiz for Primitive

17 year old skaters is the new “NBA player straight out of high school”, minus the booster money and illegal agent privileges.  It used to be skating that got a bad wrap; my how the tables have turned.  Moving along…

The “Friend Zone Fiona” meme; we all know ONE.

and my personal fav…

lulz.

Kate Upton for Beach Bunny Denim:

uhm..what was I doing again?  Hah, I guess I’ll wind this up and send you off with a farewell message from Complex’s Ari Gold soundboard.  Enjoy The Weeknd, and the weekend! (push1)

downtown invasion

Aside from a 5 year college stint in San Luis Obispo, CA, I’ve called San Diego home since 1989.  Well, scratch that.  I loved SLO and everything, but I still called SD home then too; it was only a matter of time before I made it back.  Its mostly been suburb life until recently; I moved to Bankers Hill just outside of Downtown earlier this Summer.  I’ve had a great time rediscovering DTSD, as what used to be a part of town about a 20 minute car ride away, is now a short walk or bike ride to get to.

On my way to the 24 hour fitness in Horton Plaza I pass by a vacated building on 4th street with this mural:

Had it not been for all of the Exit Through the Gift Shop Oscar noise earlier this year, I would not have recognized it

It’s Invader!  I mean, I have some what of a working knowledge of street art (origins of Shepard Fairey’s Obey movement can be traced back to SD), but Exit introduced me to the game like Scratch introduced me to the DJ culture.  Anyhoo, I digress; Here’s another one on the corner of Grape and State St.

I just found out recently that these are part of an installment that the artist was doing for the MCASD exhibition entitled – Viva la Revolucion: A Dialogue with the Urban Landscape, that began last Summer and ran through the beginning of this year.  There are 21 pieces strategically installed throughout DTSD that when walked, outline a city-sized space invader alien.  Take a look:

How many have you found?

Celeb MILF edition.  In no particular order…

Jessica Alba – 2 kids

Love me some Honey Daniels.

Gisele Bundchen – a baby popped out of this:

Legs for days; Tom Brady for nights.  Pending his availability on the draft board when it’s my turn to grab a QB; I hate you, Tom.

Vanessa Marcil – apparently her mom is an herbalist.  If that’s what I think that is…cool.   Also, Megan Fox babysits her kids.

Back dimples > cleavage.

And last, but not least.. Mrs. Fantastic herself, Jessica Alba.

See what I did there?

Enjoy the rest of your week, ya filthy animals.

downtown stories

Take me out to the ball game; take me out to the crowd. (LAD @ SAN)

Buy me some peanuts and cracker jacks; I don’t care if I never get back. (The team store is located right behind the space under the left field 336 sign.)

Let me root, root root for the home team, if they don’t win, it’s a shame. (It’s two walls of these; all different joints.  Step out to the patio and you’re standing right behind the left field fence)

For it’s 1, 2, 3 strikes you’re out, at the old ball game. (this next dude used to be a Padre)

..and so was his Padre.

We posted here.  It was a fun crowd for a weeknight/rivalry.  Go Padres!!  We’ll be back in Sept. for COL.

Where can I buy some gear?!

Hey everybody, Aroon here. I haven’t had a chance to blog much (if at all) lately due to dealing with all the behind-the-scenes stuff required to get our little project up and running and ready for s.l.a.t.e. in a couple weeks. Thankfully, we have the ridiculously talented AntonfrederiC keeping you informed and connected with some of the coolest shit around. One question I’ve gotten quite a bit from everyone recently is “Where can we buy Thisfunctional gear?!”. At the moment, our merch is very limited so please be patient and stay tuned for the announcement of the launch of our online store. We expect to have our full inventory of products available for sale by this Holiday season including all our tees, hoodies, sweaters, button-ups, and some special surprises we’re keeping our fingers crossed for. Thank you all for the love and support you’ve given us and stay tuned for those announcements tba in the very near future!

comp.etition

A driving force in advancement. Your MO, even if you’re only looking to better yourself. Them.

Nothing like a little competition to bring out the best in people. Business, athletics, professional eating; whatever you do, you do it well because you want to and you do it better than the rest because that’s the spirit of competition.

The conspirators behind Worth1000 have combined competition and creativity to produce one of the most intriguing, fascinating and impressive websites I’ve seen in a while. New contests post all the time, and they’ve also created an avenue for businesses to host competitions in order to generate their new branding logos. Peep game:

They also post a picture of the day from the archives; here’s today’s: Robert DeNiro from the celeb caricature contest

What a great concept.  Without competition, we wouldn’t have Worth1000 inspiring the world of design to stay thisfunctional.

hail caesar!

Screened Rise of the Planet of the Apes last night before the official Midnight release; radical.  This was so good!!  The nods to the original throughout the movie were done really well, and by really well I mean just the right amount of cheese.  Shouts to Draco Malfoy for playing a convincing white trash zoo keeper; that guy is really good at getting you to hate his annoying little bitch ass.  He actually provided the funniest/most ironic scene of the movie for me, and the HP fans will know exactly which part I’m talking about when they see it. The slumdog girl looked super bomb (her google image search returns some pretty fun stuff); I have no doubts in my mind that we’ll be seeing a lot more of her on the silver screen.  Franco did his thing per usual, and the cgi/animatronics/unicorn magic of Caesar and co. kept you locked in the whole 2 hours.

For those not familiar (and can’t quite put 2 and 2 together), Rise is a modern prequel to Planet of the Apes.  It is the Phantom Menace of the Apes series, if you will – except the Apes fanboys will actually like it.  James Franco plays a pharmacologist for a drug company in the bay, whose life work is dedicated to developing a drug to help cure alzheimers.  They test the drugs on chimpanzees …. and well, I’ll stop there.

It’s been a good Summer of movies and we’ve still got plenty to look forward to.

keep pushing

With each post, we are unveiling to you the audience, our story and purpose. I know it’s been a slow intro to Planet thisfunctional, and it’ll probably stay like that for the time being, but I encourage you to stay following; we appreciate your support and look forward to sharing with you this laid back lifestyle that is thisfunctional.

As a native Southern Californian (moved to San Diego from the Philippiness in 89), I’ve been exposed to skateboarding pretty much all of my life. These days, who isn’t? There’s no denying that skate culture has enjoyed a meteoric rise in popularity and social acceptance in the recent years. The industry has come a long way, and key players such as The Berrics, Thrasher, Transworld and The Skateboard Mag, as well as Street League skating have done an amazing job promoting the culture, sport and art form that is the modern skateboard movement.

The Willy Santos Foundation, lead by professional skateboarder Willy Santos (20 years pro! congrats Pare!) and his wife Shalihe, have been steady grinding on doing their part to help the awareness and advancement of skateboarding in San Diego. In its first year, the group has been hard at work promoting the foundation and raising money for their first project: building a wheel friendly skate plaza in the town of Mira Mesa. I’ve been a volunteer since the beginning (we unofficially got things started almost 3 years ago now) and this Friday we’ve got a little something brewing in Downtown SD.

We’ve gathered submissions from about 20 different local artists that have donated their time and talent to be raffled off at Keep Pushing: an art show featuring work using skateboard decks as the medium.  Doors promptly at 7p, and I’d love to see you and a fresh $20 from the ATM.  All proceeds go toward the Willy Santos Foundation.  It should be a fun event, and from hanging out with the Workshop family the last couple years it’ll definitely be a fun night downtown.

See you there!
